Description

Key Characters:

Growth Form: Robust, erect to spreading, many branched perennial herbs or shrubs 1–4 m tall, subglabrous to densely villous.

Stems:

Roots:

Leaves: Leaves simple. Alternate. Blades linear to narrowly ovate, 0.7–14.5 cm long, 0.1–4 cm wide. Margins entire. Petioles 0–1 cm long. Stipules present, often caducous.

Flowers: Flowers bisexual (perfect), actinomorphic, (3)4–5(6)-merous, in the upper leaf axils; Floral tube not prolonged beyond ovary. Calyx of 4 sepals, (6–)8–13 mm long. Petals yellow, 5–16 mm long. Stamens 8, those opposite the petals with a white, pubescent, sunken nectary. Pollen shed in tetrads. Ovary inferior, as many cells and carpels as sepals; ovules anatropous; style 1; stigma capitate or hemispherical, entire, surrounded by the anthers and pollen shed directly on it.

Fruit: Capsules thin–walled; 17–45 mm long; irregularly dehiscent. Seeds in several indistinct rows per cell; distinct; 0.6–0.8 mm long; the raphe inflated and nearly equal in size to body of seed.

Ploidy: 2n = 32*; 48

Habitat: Ponds; along streams and ditches; and in wet forest.

Elevation Range: 0–1,050 m.
